Kuala lumpur: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, today granted a conditional pardon to former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, allowing him to serve the remainder of his sentence under house arrest until August 23, 2028. The order is subject to Najib paying a RM50 million fine.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister's Department announced that the decision was made during the 64th meeting of the Pardons Board for the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya at Istana Negara today. The statement emphasized that Najib must comply with the conditions imposed. Failure to do so would result in the revocation of the conditional pardon, and he would have to serve the remainder of his sentence in prison.
Najib, 73, has been serving his prison sentence at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022. He was convicted for the misappropriation of SRC International Sdn Bhd funds. Meanwhile, the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) case involving him is currently at the appeal stage in the Court of Appeal.
The Federal Territories Pardons Board is chaired by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and includes the Attorney General, the minister responsible for the Federal Territories, and three other members appointed by His Majesty. Media personnel gathered at Istana Negara early to follow developments regarding the Pardons Board meeting. Vehicles carrying Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh and Attorney General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar were observed entering Istana Negara to attend the meeting. Both were seen leaving the venue by 9:43 am.
In July 2020, the High Court sentenced Najib to 12 years in prison and fined him RM210 million after finding him guilty of seven charges related to the misappropriation of RM42 million in SRC International Sdn Bhd funds. The conviction and sentence were upheld by the Court of Appeal in December 2021 and the Federal Court in August 2022. However, at its 61st meeting on January 29, 2024, the Pardons Board reduced Najib's prison sentence from 12 years to six years and the fine from RM210 million to RM50 million.
On December 26 last year, the High Court sentenced Najib to 15 years in prison and imposed a total fine of RM11.4 billion for four counts of abuse of power and 21 counts of money laundering involving RM2.3 billion linked to 1MDB. He filed an appeal against this decision on December 29, 2025.
Additionally, in a separate civil suit, on March 31 this year, the High Court ordered Najib to pay USD1.3 billion to SRC International, citing breach of fiduciary duties, abuse of position, and misappropriation of company funds for personal benefit. The execution of this judgment is stayed pending his appeal. Najib also faces two other pending civil suits, one filed by SRC International and Gandingan Mentari Sdn Bhd in 2021, and another USD5.64 billion suit by 1MDB and four of its subsidiaries.
