Kinabatangan Residents Remember Bung Moktar As Generous, Big-Hearted Leader

Kinabatangan: The contributions of the late Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin as Kinabatangan MP will long be remembered by the people here, who regarded him as a generous and warm-hearted leader.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Imam of Masjid Nurul Hikmah Kampung Bilit, Isde Singling, said Bung Moktar’s generosity was evident through the many contributions he made to the mosque, including financial aid, worship equipment, and copies of the Quran. Isde recalled Bung Moktar’s proactive approach in identifying the needs of the mosque, such as when he approved the allocation for a funeral bathing room. Bung Moktar’s initiative also led to the construction of Masjid Nurul Hikmah and Masjid Rancangan Suan Lamba, showcasing his commitment to religious development in Kinabatangan.

Isde, from Kampung Terus Jaya, shared a personal memory of Bung Moktar’s generosity when the leader offered him and five other imams the opportunity to perform the haj in Makkah in 2015. This initiative reflected Bung Moktar’s dedication to supporting his community’s spiritual growth.

Former Kampung Bilit chief, Salina Tombok, emphasized Bung Moktar’s role in bringing development projects to the village, including infrastructure improvements and housing for the underprivileged. Salina remembered him as a leader who understood and addressed the villagers’ problems, frequently visiting the communities and staying connected with his roots.

Sahrudin Sujarah highlighted the transformation of Kampung Bilit under Bung Moktar’s leadership, praising the development of infrastructure that significantly reduced travel time and improved accessibility. Sahrudin noted that while outsiders may not fully appreciate Bung Moktar’s impact, locals witnessed and benefited from the progress during his tenure, including advancements in education for the children of Kinabatangan.

Namrah Tombok, a schoolmate from Kampung Sukau, recalled Bung Moktar as a firm yet kind-hearted friend from their school days in 1973. She fondly remembered his ability to balance firmness with kindness, maintaining a sense of humor even in challenging situations.

Bung Moktar, 66, passed away at a private hospital in Kota Kinabalu. He had recently defended the Lamag seat in the 17th Sabah State Election. His legacy of service and development in Kinabatangan continues to be cherished by those who knew him.
