KOTA BHARU: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) in Kelantan has initiated daily coastal patrols as part of its Preventive Search and Rescue (SAR) Programme throughout the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season. This strategic move aims to safeguard the maritime community during the challenging weather conditions associated with the MTL, as announced by the National Security Council.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kelantan Maritime director Capt Erwan Shah Soahdi emphasized that the coastal patrols are designed to prevent and respond to maritime incidents during the monsoon. He mentioned that the agency is also preparing for potential flood monitoring, ready to assist the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) if flood relief efforts become necessary.

Capt Erwan Shah highlighted the importance of early implementation of such initiatives, stressing that cooperation from all stakeholders is crucial in mitigating potential dangers. The MMEA is actively advising maritime communities, including fishe
rmen, shipping operators, and marine enthusiasts, to exercise heightened caution during the MTL.

Acknowledging the economic reliance of fishermen on their activities, he noted that while MMEA cannot restrict them from going to sea, they are committed to ensuring their safety by maintaining vigilance. He emphasized the importance of adhering to weather forecasts, particularly regarding strong wind warnings issued by the Meteorological Department.

The Kelantan MMEA has deployed four teams, each comprising 10 officers, to monitor maritime activities, particularly in coastal areas. They are also reaching out to beach resorts to advise guests and operators against participating in certain water activities, such as swimming far from the shore, during this season.
