Kota Bharu:Kelantan The Kelantan government sees the Lebir Dam project, announced in Budget 2027, as a significant initiative to tackle flooding and enhance water supply in the state.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud emphasized that the project is part of a broader strategy that includes several water infrastructure projects, such as the Phase Two Sungai Golok Integrated River Basin Development Project. Additionally, the construction of the Riverbank Water Reservoir and Water Treatment Plant in Machang, which is currently in the design phase, alongside the replacement of old water pipes, aims to bolster the state's water supply system.
The operation of the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) from Gombak to Kota Bharu is scheduled for December, and an integrated bus terminal will be built with the Kota Bharu ECRL Station to complete Kelantan's transportation network. The state government also hopes for the extension of the East Coast Highway from Terengganu to Kelantan to ensure balanced infrastructure growth.
The federal government's plans to enhance the Universiti Sains Malaysia Specialist Hospital with robotic surgery technology and to build kindergartens for the Orang Asli community are welcomed by the state. Confidence in these developments is bolstered by the cooperative relationship between the Kelantan state government and the federal government.
State Secretary Datuk Dr Tengku Mohamed Faziharudean Tengku Feissal highlighted the anticipation for the Lebir Dam, expected to mitigate around 80% of Kelantan's flooding issues. He also noted that the state had allocated five acres of land in Tunjong for the integrated bus terminal at the ECRL Station, with construction expected to commence later this year.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, during his Budget 2027 speech, affirmed the Lebir Dam's role as a long-term flood solution. The budget also addresses water supply improvements with the Machang Water Treatment Plant and pipe replacements. The ECRL's Phase One, linking Kota Bharu to the Gombak Terminal, is set to start operations soon, with plans to extend the route to Rantau Panjang and substantial funding allocated to enhance bus services in major cities.
