Alor Setar: The Kedah government is actively monitoring and addressing the construction of unauthorized non-Islamic houses of worship within the state, as stated by Wong Chia Zhen, the State Human Resources, Chinese, Indian and Siamese Communities, and Non-Governmental Organisations Committee chairman. This initiative is being handled with caution due to its implications on racial sensitivities and adherence to existing laws.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Wong Chia Zhen highlighted that local authorities are keeping a close watch on non-Islamic houses of worship built without approval across Kedah. Kuala Muda and Kulim districts have reported the highest number of applications for these establishments, with several unauthorized structures identified in these areas. Wong shared these details during a session at the Kedah State Legislative Assembly.
The state government prefers negotiation and amicable resolution over stringent measures to address issues related to existing non-Islamic houses of worship. By doing so, it aims to maintain an orderly approach to these matters. Wong emphasized the importance of new non-Islamic houses of worship adhering to established guidelines and regulations, ensuring harmony between physical development and social stability within the state.
In a demonstration of its commitment, the state government approved five applications for government land sites for non-Islamic houses of worship in the Kuala Muda district during the RIBI committee meeting held on April 13.
Regarding the Sri Veerama Kaliaman Temple located at the Tongkang Yard JKR Quarters, Wong mentioned that the temple is slated for relocation to a more appropriate site. The move aims to enhance comfort and safety while aligning with structured land planning. Several potential locations have been proposed by the temple committee, and the Kota Setar District land administrator is currently assessing their suitability.
