Kedah Government Considers State-owned Ferry Service for Langkawi Route

Alor Setar: The Kedah government is considering the establishment of a state-owned company to manage ferry services to Langkawi, addressing the increasing demand for transportation to the island.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Agriculture, Plantation and Transport Committee chairman Dzowahir Ab Ghani emphasized the importance of conducting a comprehensive study to ensure that the proposed company can operate effectively without placing a financial strain on the state government. The study will focus on operational costs, commercial viability, management, and technical support.

Dzowahir highlighted that, if the study’s findings are positive, the initiative could significantly benefit Langkawi residents who have faced challenges due to a lack of ferry services. He made these remarks while concluding the motion of thanks for the royal address by the Sultan of Kedah, Al-Aminul Karim Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah, at the state assembly.

The state government is also considering partnerships with private entities to establish the ferry company. This effort aims to support the public, especially Langkawi residents who rely on ferry services for their daily commutes to the mainland.

In addition, Dzowahir mentioned that discussions have taken place with the Ministry of Transport regarding a proposal to relocate the Kuala Kedah Passenger Jetty Terminal further offshore to address issues related to shallow water levels.
