Casablanca: Kanadevia Inova AG (Inova) has entered into a 33.5-year concession agreement to develop a waste-to-energy project in Casablanca, Morocco. This ambitious venture encompasses the design, financing, construction, and operation of a state-of-the-art facility aimed at transforming waste management and energy production in the region.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Swiss-based Inova, a subsidiary of Kanadevia Corporation, is collaborating with Moroccan energy firm Nareva and ITOCHU Corporation. Together, they will establish a special purpose company to manage the project's engineering, procurement, construction, and maintenance over the long term. The waste-to-energy facility will be strategically situated next to the M©diouna landfill, one of Africa's largest, and is expected to process approximately 1.5 million tonnes of waste annually. It will boast a power generation capacity of roughly 126 megawatts electric (MWe), with operations slated to commence in June 2030.
The project aims to deliver hygienic waste treatment solutions while concurrently transforming waste into a viable energy source. The facility will leverage Inova's advanced large-scale combustion and boiler systems in conjunction with its Autaro automatic combustion control technology. Additionally, the project will feature a 50 MW solar power plant, a four MW landfill gas recovery and utilisation facility, and a leachate treatment unit.
The integrated project is projected to generate around one terawatt-hour of electricity each year, a supply sufficient for approximately one million residents. Furthermore, the design of the facility incorporates provisions for the future implementation of carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technologies to enhance efforts in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting long-term decarbonisation.
