Kaamatan Festival Symbolises Gratitude and Unity, Says Tun Musa

Kota kinabalu: The Kaamatan Festival is not merely a continuation of a tradition passed down through generations, but has also become a symbol of gratitude that reflects the richness of cultural heritage and serves as a platform for uniting the people of Sabah, Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman said today. Although the role of padi cultivation in the lives of the people has evolved in line with modernisation and current developments, he said the essence of Kaamatan as a celebration of gratitude, togetherness and mutual respect remains intact.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, in a message in conjunction with the festival, Musa highlighted that Sabah's diverse society, comprising more than 30 ethnic groups and various sub-ethnic communities, is the state's greatest strength. He noted that Kaamatan has evolved into a celebration that brings together all segments of society regardless of race, religion or background. Musa emphasized, "The harmony and mutual understanding long enjoyed by the people of Sabah continue to serve as an example to the nation. Therefore, we must continue to reject any elements of division, extremist ideologies and narrow sentiments that could undermine the unity and goodwill we have long nurtured together."

On the state's rapid development, Musa stressed the importance of ensuring that no community or area is left behind in the course of economic growth. For this purpose, he advocated for continued emphasis on education, skills training, infrastructure development, digital connectivity, and economic opportunities, particularly in rural and interior areas. He also advised the younger generation to equip themselves with knowledge, discipline, and noble values so they can contribute meaningfully to Sabah's future.

Musa also highlighted the need to preserve and appreciate cultural traditions, the heritage of indigenous communities, and the values passed down by ancestors. He stated, "The traditions, languages, arts and customs of our communities are invaluable treasures that form the identity and soul of Sabah." Concluding his message, Musa, along with his wife, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin, extended Kaamatan greetings to all those celebrating the festival. He called on the people to be grateful for the blessings bestowed upon them and to strengthen the spirit of unity, compassion, and mutual care to ensure Sabah continues to remain peaceful, progressive, and prosperous.
