Semporna: A total of 350 people took part in the Zero Tolerance for Violence Programme in Semporna today, featuring Anti-Sexual Harassment Advocacy and End Violence Against Women (EVAW) components organised by the Women's Development Department (JPW).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the programme was officiated by Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. It supports the government's initiative to bring awareness and advocacy on sexual harassment and violence to every level of society. Nancy emphasized that awareness alone is insufficient; people must also know how to act when confronted with such situations.

"Semporna has a diverse community, including those living in rural areas and on islands. This programme proves the government's commitment that no one is left behind, whether in gaining knowledge, receiving protection or accessing help channels," Nancy stated at the programme's launch. She stressed the importance of knowing where to seek help and the need for community collaboration to prevent ongoing violence.

She also highlighted the crucial role of community leaders, such as village heads, as key figures in addressing domestic violence issues at the grassroots level. Village heads are urged to be proactive in protecting their communities and participating in advocacy programmes related to sexual harassment and domestic violence.

"The safety and dignity of women is not the responsibility of one party alone; it requires a shared commitment from families, communities, educational institutions, workplaces, government agencies, and civil society to build a safe environment," she added.
