JPV Receives Over 37,000 Animal Welfare Complaints

Accra:The Department of Veterinary Services (JPV) has received a total of 37,043 complaints related to animal welfare from January 2020 to September 2026.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Aida Muhid, the deputy director-general of Veterinary Health, reported that 6,749 of these complaints were addressed under the Animal Welfare Act 2015 (Act 772). Offences included failure to provide basic needs, inadequate healthcare, unsuitable living environments, and treatment causing injury or suffering to animals.

Animal health and welfare in the country are influenced by international standards. Malaysia supports the Regional Animal Welfare Strategy for Asia and the Pacific, aiming to enhance animal management practices. Certifications like Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Animal Husbandry Practices (GAHP) are emphasized to ensure food safety, worker health, environmental care, and high animal welfare standards.

From March 2021 to September 2026, 1,907 out of 3,314 license applications under the Welfare Act 2015 were approved. The licenses cover 13 activities, including animal accommodation, performing animals, research, rescue, shelters, quarantine, training, slaughter, and stray animal control. Licensing ensures responsible conduct and compliance with animal welfare standards.
