JPJ To Introduce New SOP, Guidelines For Heavy Vehicles In May

Terengganu: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) will introduce new standard operating procedures (SOP) and guidelines for commercial and public service vehicles next month. JPJ director-general Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli stated that these measures aim to address the recent increase in accidents involving heavy vehicles, particularly lorries.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Aedy Fadly highlighted that the SOP would enforce stricter actions against commercial vehicle drivers who exceed speed limits, thereby endangering other road users. He mentioned that JPJ is currently collaborating with other stakeholders to scrutinize and detail the new SOP, with a focus on vehicles weighing over 7.5 tonnes.

He further explained that the new guidelines would include a ban on such vehicles from driving in the far-right lane, as previously announced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. These statements were made during the Terengganu JPJ Appreciation Ceremony and Aidilfitri event.

In another development, Aedy Fadly reported that 8,862 accident cases were recorded during the six-day Hari Raya Aidilfitri (HRA) Special Operation 2025 (Op HRA 2025), conducted from March 24 to April 8. This figure shows a decrease from the 9,859 cases recorded during Op HRA 2024, which also lasted six days from April 8 to 13.

He noted that the number of deaths also decreased from 119 people during Op HRA 2024 to 85 people during Op HRA 2025. This reduction is attributed to increased public awareness of road safety, fostered by advocacy programs conducted by JPJ and other enforcement agencies.
