KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (JPJ) initiated a surprise nationwide inspection operation, dubbed Op Mengejut Puspakom, to ensure compliance with vehicle standards at Puspakom inspection centers. This unannounced operation was part of a strategic enforcement approach directed by Transport Minister Anthony Loke.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, JPJ senior enforcement director Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan stated that the operation was implemented without prior notice to Puspakom, following the minister’s directive to conduct enforcement in phases. The first phase involved roadblocks set up on selected highways, while the second phase encompassed spot checks at various Puspakom centers.

Muhammad Kifli revealed that during the operation at the Wangsa Maju Puspakom location, a dedicated team of 350 officers and personnel inspected a total of 115 lorries within a two-hour period. The operation resulted in 69 summonses being issued, actions taken against 29 vehicles, and the seizure of five cars and two lorries.

The operation identified several violations by lorry drivers, notably the use of unsafe, worn-out retreaded tires, which pose a significant safety risk due to their potential to burst unexpectedly.
