Journalists With Integrity Not Merely News Writers – Chow

Penang: Journalists with integrity do not merely write news but deliver accurate information and act as watchdogs in a democratic country and shape public opinion. Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow emphasized the crucial role of journalists in a fast-paced world abundant with information, which can often be confusing. He highlighted the responsibility of journalists in sifting, researching, and ensuring that accurate and correct information reaches the public during his speech at the Penang state-level National Journalists Day (HAWANA) 2025 celebrations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chow underscored that journalists have the duty to act as a barrier between fact and slander, truth and manipulation. He urged media practitioners to adhere to journalism ethics and ensure that disseminated information is not only accurate but also fosters understanding and unity. Chow also expressed the Penang government’s appreciation for the media’s role as a strategic partner in the state’s development, stating that the media’s support and cooperation are vital for public understanding and fair assessment of government policies and initiatives.

Meanwhile, Media Mutiara Club president Mohd Iskandar Othman highlighted that HAWANA has become an important platform to honor the media’s role in championing freedom and safety of journalists and to encourage discussions on ethics, digital challenges, and the future of the media industry. He also appreciated the Communications Ministry’s initiative to launch Tabung Kasih @HAWANA in April 2023, implemented by the Malaysian National News Agency (BERNAMA).

Since its inception, the fund has assisted 315 media practitioners across the country, including those who are active and retired, particularly those facing health issues, life difficulties, or disaster impacts. The initiative provides not only financial aid but also demonstrates care and concern for journalists who have significantly contributed to society.

The highlight of HAWANA 2025 will occur on June 14 at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur, officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, with an estimated attendance of 1,000 media practitioners, both local and foreign. Organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as its implementing agency, HAWANA will feature various events, including a Pesta Pantun on May 31 and a prelaunch with strategic partners at Wisma Bernama on June 3, as well as a media event jointly organised with the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) on June 14.
