Johor bahru: The Johor government is set to introduce a RM1,000 rental deposit assistance program next year, aimed at alleviating the financial burden of individuals in the state who struggle to meet upfront accommodation payments. Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi announced this initiative in response to complaints from tenants regarding the difficulties of paying rental deposits.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the initiative will be rolled out through the Johor State Housing Development Corporation (PKPJ) and will also be open to federal civil servants stationed in Johor. This includes teachers, nurses, medical officers, police personnel, and armed forces members. The initiative aims to not only support local residents but also newcomers to Johor, especially those serving in federal capacities.

Onn Hafiz highlighted the necessity for rental deposit assistance alongside rental support, particularly for individuals starting their careers who may not yet have the financial means to cover such expenses. The assistance is intended to benefit both Bangsa Johor and federal civil servants working in the state.

The first phase of the program will target approximately 10,000 recipients, who will also qualify for an additional RM2,500 in rental assistance, totaling RM3,500 per person. This support is available to individuals residing and working in Johor.

Further details and new housing initiatives will be disclosed during the Johor Budget presentation in November. In a related development, RM22 million was allocated for Phase 5 of the Perumahan Kasih Johor Initiative, benefiting 6,000 recipients. Phase 6, expected next month, aims to assist an additional 5,000 recipients.

Since 2022, the Johor government has invested RM337 million in its housing agenda, aiding nearly 100,000 recipients across the state.
