Johor bahru: Johor UMNO Liaison Committee chairman Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi has firmly denied allegations by former UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi regarding the dissolution of the Johor legislative assembly. Onn Hafiz clarified that the dissolution was not a directive from the palace but was conducted following the consent of Johor Regent Tunku Mahkota Ismail, as per Article 23, Second Part of the Laws of the State of Johor.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Onn Hafiz emphasized that the Menteri Besar does not have the authority to dissolve the state legislative assembly unilaterally. The process must adhere to the legal framework established by the Laws of the State of Johor, requiring royal consent before taking effect. He stated, "I had an audience and presented the matter. After receiving consent, I announced the dissolution of the state legislative assembly to the people."
Onn Hafiz expressed concern over attempts to misrepresent the constitutional process, warning that such actions could lead to perceptions of royal interference in Johor UMNO's political affairs. He highlighted the seriousness of Mohd Puad's statement, noting its potential to affect 3R sensitivities, particularly those involving the royal institution, and the possible impact on public harmony and order.
In response to the situation, Onn Hafiz announced that Johor UMNO will file a police report to initiate investigations and further actions by the authorities. He urged all parties to respect the royal institution, comply with the constitution, and avoid exploiting the institution for political disputes.
The development follows Mohd Puad's announcement of his immediate resignation from UMNO.
