John Crane Celebrates Half-Century Milestone in Dry Gas Seal Innovation

London: John Crane, a global leader in flow-control technologies and a subsidiary of Smiths Group plc, is celebrating 50 years since it introduced a revolutionary innovation in gas compression sealing that transformed the industry. In 1976, John Crane launched the Type 28 dry gas seal, setting a new standard for compressor reliability and sealing performance that continues to influence the industry today.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, while the foundational work on non-contacting spiral-groove technology began in 1968 and saw its first commercial installation in 1975, it was the 1976 introduction of the Type 28 dry gas seal that marked a significant turning point. This innovation has since become a crucial component in centrifugal compressors across various applications, including oil and gas, petrochemicals, and power generation, as well as in emerging fields like hydrogen and carbon capture.

The Type 28 dry gas seal's development and deployment have been pivotal in enhancing efficiency and safety in the industry, solidifying John Crane's position as a leader in technological advancements for rotating equipment. As the company celebrates this milestone, it reflects on the impact its innovation has had over the past five decades and continues to contribute to evolving industrial needs.
