Kuala lumpur: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has called on all Members of Parliament to organise Larian Cergas programmes in their respective constituencies to promote a healthy lifestyle among lawmakers and the public. He said the inaugural five-kilometre run held at the Parliament grounds today marked the beginning of the initiative, which would be monitored for implementation in all parliamentary constituencies.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Johari expressed his commitment to oversee the progress of this initiative to ensure its widespread implementation. "We will then compile the total running distance from all constituencies, from Perlis to Sabah and Sarawak. Perhaps we can break a world record with all MPs participating," he told reporters after taking part in Larian Cergas Parlimen 2026 today. The event also saw the presence of Dewan Negara President Senator Datuk Awang Bemee Awang Ali Basah and MPs from various political parties.
Johari highlighted that the programme aims to strengthen ties among MPs regardless of political affiliation while encouraging them to lead by example in adopting a healthy lifestyle. He emphasized that the initiative was also for the benefit of the public, as maintaining good health is a priority.
The initiative complements existing efforts in Parliament, including the sugar-free day observed every Wednesday and mandatory health screenings for MPs. Johari noted that the inaugural Larian Cergas Parlimen received an encouraging response, with more than 600 participants from various states taking part. "This is a good start and I am confident programmes like this will continue to grow in all parliamentary constituencies," he said.
