Kuala lumpur: Amid the roar of million-ringgit racing machines and the cheers of thousands of fans at iconic circuits around the world, Malaysia is making its mark on the international motorsport scene, as the work of its homegrown talents gains increasing global recognition. According to BERNAMA News Agency, for Malaysia today, the meaning of independence is no longer merely freedom from colonial rule, but is also reflected in the ability and courage of its people to make their mark on the world stage through the achievements of racers, engineers, mechanics, and component manufacturers. In the highly competitive world of motorsport, the involvement of mechanic Muhammad Firdaus Mukhazir, the success of local brand Racing Boy (RCB), spearheaded by MKA Group, and the emergence of talented young racer Muhammad Hakim Danish Ramli are proof that Malaysian expertise is increasingly gaining international recognition. The reality is that success in racing does not depend solely on the racer, but is also driven by every individual working behind the scenes. Muhammad Firdaus, 28, has demonstrated that Malaysian expertise continues to earn recognition from overseas teams, despite the attention given to fellow Malaysians such as Habibtullah Mohd Fuad and Akmal Johari. As a member of the MT Helmets MSI team, he does more than simply turn screws, as he carries the responsibility for the racer's safety and the performance of the machine on the world's most elite racing grids. Muhammad Firdaus' success is among the evidence that his Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) background has helped produce internationally skilled personnel, proving that local talent can stand shoulder to shoulder with experts from Europe. Stories of success in sports demonstrate that the meaning of independence is not merely celebrated every August, but is expressed through equal opportunities, access to education and development that enable every citizen to hone their talents, pursue their dreams, and bring glory to the country on the world stage. Muhammad Firdaus demonstrated his technical capabilities when the rider under his care, Ryusei Yamanaka, secured a podium finish, although he was not riding for Malaysia. 'My fondest memory was when Yamanaka secured his first Moto3 podium in 2025. From that moment, many people were surprised to learn that there was a Malaysian mechanic behind his success, and people began to recognise me,' he said. Muhammad Firdaus, who is also a mentor to Hakim Danish, said his ambition went beyond remaining a team's second mechanic, as he wanted to break the tradition of the chief mechanic role being dominated by European personnel. 'I don't think there are any (Asian chief mechanics) at the moment. Most are from Spain, for example. This is my fourth year and I will try to work towards becoming a chief mechanic next year,' he said, adding that his goal was not financial gain but to prove that an Asian could also become one of the world's best mechanics in motorsport. The country's innovation is also maki ng waves through Malaysian-owned automotive company MKA Group, based in Puchong, Selangor, with Doc Dol as its director. According to him, the company now has nearly 800 employees globally, including branches in Indonesia, Thailand, and Italy, while its operational heart remains in Puchong, staffed entirely by Malaysians. Through its RCB brand, the company received recognition from the Malaysia Book of Records (MBOR) as Malaysia's first supplier of 'Nagamaki Handle Grip' used in MotoGP competition. Besides grips, various other components such as handlebars, footrests, brake protectors, and engine protectors manufactured by the company are now sought after by international teams. Doc Dol revealed that the situation has now changed, with elite global teams themselves approaching the company to place custom orders and willing to pay for the quality offered. He also acknowledged that when local products were first introduced, he had to contend with perceptions of inferiority among overseas experts, particularly regarding the products' colour identity. Global confidence in the RCB brand began in 2018 through the Gresini Racing Moto3 team and riders Jorge Martin and Fabio Di Giannantonio. Today, nine MotoGP teams use RCB components, including eight teams across the Moto2 and Moto3 categories. The achievement demonstrates that Malaysian innovation and engineering possess quality and reliability on par with international brands at the highest level of motorsport. For Hakim Danish, the meaning of independence is not merely about flying the Jalur Gemilang, but also the tremendous sacrifice of dedicating his youth to rigorous training and spending months living abroad. The 19-year-old rider for AEON Credit-MT Helmets-MSi returns home only two or three times a year, in order to ensure consistent performance on the world's elite racing circuits. All the hardship eventually paid off in Brno, Czech Republic, when he fought back from a 12-place grid penalty to end Malaysia's decade-long wait for a victory in Moto3. 'When the Negaraku was played, all the exhaustion I had endured felt worthwhile. It was the answer to the price of my sacrifice all this time,' he said. Behind the fame, he carries a heavy emotional burden, having had to sacrifice time with his family to ensure the Jalur Gemilang is raised high at the top of the podium. 'I had to sacrifice my family's birthdays and the festivities of Hari Raya. I had no choice but to harden my heart for the sake of upholding the honour of young Malaysian talent on the global stage,' he said emotionally. The synergy between Muhammad Firdaus as the 'hands' that bring the machine to life, RCB as the technological 'backbone', and Hakim Danish as the 'heart' signals that the dream of an all-Malaysian team is no longer an impossible one. If once the Jalur Gemilang flew through the struggle to defend the nation's sovereignty, today it continues to fly proudly through the achievements of Malaysian talent in expertise, innovation and international motorsport.
