Kuala lumpur: The 2026 International Waqf Dakwah Convention today outlined three key resolutions aimed at strengthening waqf institutions and enhancing the waqf ecosystem to meet current needs.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the resolutions include establishing a working consortium to strengthen waqf institutions, leveraging technology to expand the reach of dakwah, and enhancing the waqf ecosystem through more effective governance and strategic cooperation among stakeholders.
Malaysian Islamic Welfare Organisation (PERKIM) president Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the resolutions were the outcome of discussions and knowledge-sharing during the convention, which brought together experts, thinkers, waqf practitioners, religious institutions, the corporate sector, and delegates from various countries.
"These three resolutions are not merely a list of proposals, but a vision of the future we want to build together. A future where waqf is no longer viewed solely as a charitable practice, but as an economic driver, a catalyst for innovation, a solution to social challenges, and a key force in national development," he said.
He said this when presenting the resolutions at the closing ceremony of the 2026 International Waqf Dakwah Convention at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
Abang Johari, who is also the Sarawak Premier, said the first resolution proposed the establishment of a working consortium to review and enhance the waqf management structure, enabling waqf institutions to assume a more structured role.
The second resolution involved harnessing technology through a cash waqf platform that connects funds, expertise, innovation, and collaboration networks to expand the benefits of dakwah beyond national borders.
The third resolution focused on integrated efforts to strengthen the overall waqf ecosystem, covering governance, digitalisation, human capital development, syariah-compliant investments, innovation, and strategic collaboration among the government, religious institutions, the corporate sector, academia, and the community.
Abang Johari said waqf development could no longer focus solely on asset management, but must embrace a broader perspective that recognises waqf as an instrument for ummah development capable of generating lasting benefits for religion, society, and the country.
He said waqf that is managed with integrity, guided by expertise, and empowered through technology has the potential to deliver benefits beyond geographical, racial, and generational boundaries.
Abang Johari expressed hope that the resolution document submitted to the relevant stakeholders would help position waqf as a driving force in societal development, elevating the dignity of the ummah and contributing to the progress of Malaysia and the Islamic world.
He also hoped that all recommendations submitted would be considered and further refined by the federal government, state governments, State Islamic Religious Councils, waqf institutions, the corporate sector, and other stakeholders to build a more modern, sustainable, and high-impact waqf ecosystem.
