Kuala Lumpur:Safety issues in schools should not be concealed to protect reputations, as this may prevent authorities from taking action, stated Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Khalid emphasized the importance of strengthening cooperation between the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and schools to ensure that all incidents are reported and addressed. He highlighted that attempts by certain parties to hide issues could hinder problem resolution.
Mohd Khalid noted that school safety is a shared responsibility that requires coordination among PDRM, schools, the Ministry of Education, and parents. School liaison officers are actively involved in visiting and coordinating with school authorities on safety issues.
He also mentioned that PDRM engages in regular discussions with schools and parent-teacher associations regarding safety measures, including proposals to install closed-circuit television (CCTV). Additionally, the Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK) has increased patrols at schools and hostels.
Referring to the death of a 16-year-old student at a school in Yong Peng, Johor, Mohd Khalid stated that some details remain unconfirmed and that a thorough investigation will be conducted before any conclusions are made.
Meanwhile, PDRM has enhanced its Negotiator Cell by introducing a handbook for crisis negotiations. This cell, set up under the Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA), consists of about 40 officers with negotiation expertise, selected based on their experience.
Mohd Khalid explained that the Negotiator Cell collaborates with other divisions within PDRM and has shared crisis management experiences with the Royal Brunei Police Force. Bukit Aman KDNKA deputy director and Negotiator Cell commandant Datuk M.V Srikumar Nair noted that each crisis is unique, with no standard response time due to varying circumstances.
