Increased Education Funding in Budget 2027 Aims for Tangible Improvements

Accra:Better school facilities, improved safety, and a more conducive learning environment are among the key improvements hoped for with the increased allocation for education in Budget 2027.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, West Malaysia Malay Teachers Union (KGMMB) president Dr. Mohd Sobri Yusuf emphasized that the RM69 billion allocation, up from RM66.2 billion this year, should translate into significant improvements in schools, measured by the actual benefits delivered to teachers and students. He noted that regardless of the allocation size, desired outcomes depend on funding leading to positive and tangible changes.

Dr. Mohd Sobri highlighted that the doubled school maintenance allocation, now RM2 billion, could directly benefit school communities by ensuring safe and comfortable learning environments. He stressed the importance of directing maintenance funds to schools most in need, particularly for essential repairs like leaking roofs and faulty wiring.

He also mentioned that employing 200 teaching assistants in primary schools with large pupil numbers could reduce teachers' workload, allowing them to concentrate more on teaching and addressing students' learning needs. Additionally, he stressed the importance of monitoring the Supplementary Food Programme (RMT) to ensure students receive meals that meet quality standards and comply with prescribed menus and portion sizes.

Meanwhile, Federation of Peninsular Malay Students (GPMS) president Muhd Fazreen Ismadi Fauzi remarked that increasing the Early Schooling Assistance (BAP) to RM200 would assist parents, especially those from the B40 group, in preparing their children for school. He highlighted the need for measures to keep school supplies affordable to provide lasting relief to families.

Muhd Fazreen also proposed that the RM2,500 allowance for Form Six students be disbursed monthly rather than in a lump sum, to help students manage their educational expenses more effectively throughout the year. He emphasized the importance of closely monitoring aid distribution to ensure funds reach the intended recipients without leakage.

Finally, he stressed the necessity for school facilities to support students with disabilities, especially with the planned enrolment of six-year-olds in Year One from 2027, ensuring schools are equipped with appropriate facilities and support services for all students.
