IATA Calls for Government Action to Boost Sustainable Aviation Fuel Production

Kuala Lumpur: The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has called on governments to establish policy frameworks to increase the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and bring down its costs, highlighting that current SAF volumes fall significantly short of requirements and production expenses remain elevated.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the airline trade association reaffirmed the industry’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Brendan Sullivan, IATA’s global head of cargo, expressed concern over the slow progress in SAF production, stating that major fuel producers have either delayed or sidelined their investments in SAF. To aid in emissions calculation and reporting, including SAF usage, IATA announced it would soon launch CO2 Connect for Cargo.

The association emphasized the crucial role of air cargo in maintaining global supply chain resilience. IATA urged both governments and the industry to focus on meeting fundamental customer expectations, which include safety, security, digitalization, and sustainability. Sullivan highlighted the clear value of air cargo, whether in supporting global trade, enabling e-commerce, or delivering essential humanitarian aid.

To meet these customer expectations, Sullivan noted that the air cargo industry must enhance safety and security measures, accelerate digitalization efforts, and fulfill its sustainability commitments. In addressing the safe transport of lithium batteries, IATA called on governments to intensify efforts to curb rogue shippers and support the International Civil Aviation Organization’s initiatives to strengthen Annex 18 of the Chicago Convention, which governs the safe transport of dangerous goods by air.

Sullivan pointed out the growing volume of lithium battery shipments and the associated risks of undeclared or mis-declared goods. He urged governments to match the industry’s investment in training, certification, and technology with strong oversight and enforcement measures.
