Kathmandu: Flash floods and landslides across the Himalayan border region of Nepal and China's autonomous region of Tibet have resulted in the death of at least 780 people, while over 2,500 individuals remain missing, including several hundred tourists. The casualty toll is expected to increase as rescue operations continue to unfold. According to France24.com, Nepal's disaster agency reported on Sunday that the total number of missing individuals on its side of the border has risen to 2,502. On the Tibetan side, China's Xinhua news agency confirmed 16 fatalities and 546 people missing. The figures remain fluid, which is typical in the aftermath of significant natural disasters. The missing include a substantial number of foreign nationals. As per Nepal's disaster agency, 598 foreigners, possibly tourists or foreign workers, are still unaccounted for. Chinese officials reported a similar scenario, with 261 foreigners missing. The Nepal Tourism Board highlighted that among the missing are 149 Nepali tourists , while the disaster agency estimates the figure to be slightly lower at 127. Compounding the situation, nearly 100 Chinese nationals are among the missing in Nepal, as stated by China's foreign ministry. Meanwhile, the Nepal Tourism Board reported eight Chinese nationals unaccounted for, with 16 successfully rescued. The disaster has significantly affected Indian nationals, with the new tourism board figures indicating 98 are missing, although 85 have been rescued. Similarly, around 85 US citizens are also missing, according to a State Department spokesperson, although nine have been evacuated safely. The impact is global, with missing persons reported from various countries. Ukrainians account for 61 missing individuals, Australians for 41, and Malaysians for 33. Other affected nationalities include Latvians, Canadians, South Koreans, Singaporeans, Germans, Russians, South Africans, and many more. The situation remains dire as international efforts continue to locate and rescue those unaccounted for.
