Santiago: The Malaysian team began their FIH Hockey Women’s Junior World Cup campaign on a sour note when they lost 4-1 to Japan in their opening Group A tie in Santiago, Chile, early today (Malaysian time).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Japan secured their goals through Yoshida Rei in the fifth minute, Saiti Hanami in the eighth minute, Tabuchi Sena in the 10th minute, and Usi Ayano in the 56th minute. Malaysia’s only goal came from Zawiatul Akma Hartomo in the 21st minute, serving as a consolation in the match.
National women’s junior team head coach Lailin Abu Hassan expressed satisfaction with his players’ spirited performance despite the defeat. He acknowledged their hesitation during the first quarter, which led to the concession of three goals but commended them for fighting back and securing a goal through a penalty corner setpiece.
Looking ahead to their second Group A match against Chile on Thursday, Lailin hopes the team can address their weaknesses and avoid repeating the same mistakes. Malaysia will conclude their group fixtures with a match against the Dutch on Saturday.
