Putrajaya: Cloud seeding operations are being carried out in haze-affected areas, particularly those recording Air Pollutant Index (API) readings above 150, as well as in areas where dams are experiencing falling water levels. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the operations were being conducted in collaboration with the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) and the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the measure was deemed necessary to prevent disruptions to water supply amid the current hot weather. Dr Ahmad Zahid emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that water levels at many dams have been declining. He mentioned that cloud seeding operations are underway in Putrajaya and are scheduled to occur in Sarawak, Kedah, and Perlis from September 3 to 5.

Dr Ahmad Zahid explained that cloud seeding is not only conducted based on need but also depends on prevailing weather conditions. The movement of clouds is closely monitored to ensure they are directed towards the targeted areas. This strategic approach aims to maximize the effectiveness of the cloud seeding operations.

In Sarawak, three areas recorded hazardous API readings today. The Department of Environment's (DOE) Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) portal reported that the API reading at the Serian Police headquarters monitoring station reached 412, followed by Samarahan at 332 and Kuching at 304. Sri Aman also recorded a very unhealthy API reading of 228.
