HAWANA 2026 Summit Highlights Media Practitioners’ Role in Evolving Industry

Penang: National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) continues to serve as a vital platform for media professionals to reflect on achievements, tackle current challenges, and plan the future of the journalism industry amidst a rapidly changing media landscape. Radio Televisyen Malaysia director-general Ashwad Ismail emphasized the importance of HAWANA as a unifying 'heart' for media practitioners.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ashwad Ismail highlighted the annual opportunity for reflection that HAWANA provides, enabling media professionals to recognize their accomplishments and shortcomings while understanding present challenges. He noted that the summit allows industry players, including content creators and journalists, to discuss the future of journalism in the face of technological advancements and emerging challenges such as artificial intelligence.

The HAWANA 2026 Summit, held at the PICCA Arena Butterworth Convention Centre, was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. The event was attended by prominent figures such as Penang Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, and other key officials from the Communications Ministry and the state of Penang.

Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Bernama's Chief Executive Officer and HAWANA 2026 Working Committee Chairman, along with other senior members of Bernama, participated in the summit. The event underscored the significance of recognizing the contributions, dedication, and professionalism of media practitioners in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Siti Nor Aina Omar, a lecturer at Han Chiang University College of Communication, noted the positive impact of programs like HAWANA on the journalism industry. She described HAWANA as an annual gathering that honors both current and past members of the media profession.

Journalist Siti Zubaidah Zakaria from Sinar Harian in Kedah supported the continuation of HAWANA, highlighting its role in appreciating the contributions and sacrifices of media practitioners. She also called for improvements in welfare and work equipment to ensure accurate and truthful news reporting.

The HAWANA 2026 Summit, themed "Media Integrity Strengthens Credibility," attracted approximately 1,000 media practitioners, including journalists from various ASEAN countries. Organized by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency, the summit aims to recognize the essential role of media professionals in maintaining integrity and credibility in journalism.
