Hartasuma To Develop Motorised Lift At Penang Hilltop Temple

George Town: Hartasuma Sdn Bhd (Hartasuma), the company selected through the Request For Proposal (RFP) process for the Bukit Bendera cable car project, has announced plans to develop a motorised lift, or ‘people mover system,’ at the Arulmigu Balathandayuthapani Temple (Hilltop) in Jalan Kebun Bunga. This initiative aims to improve access for Hindu devotees to the temple, which is situated over 100 metres above ground level.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow revealed that the project, estimated to cost between RM4 million and RM6 million, would significantly enhance accessibility for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, pregnant women, and others who face challenges in reaching the temple due to its steep incline and numerous steps. Chow made the announcement during a visit to the temple in conjunction with the Thaipusam celebration, where he was accompanied by other government officials and leaders.

The temple, dedicated to Lord Murugan, has seen over 1.5 million Hindu devotees and tourists gather for the Thaipusam festivities, which include the procession of two chariots to different temples in the area. The new transportation system proposed by Hartasuma is expected to provide a long-awaited solution to accessibility issues that have persisted for 30 years.

Further details from Chow indicated that Hartasuma plans to conduct a feasibility study to identify the most suitable lift or transportation system for the temple’s location. This study, part of Hartasuma’s corporate social responsibility initiative, is expected to take six months, with construction estimated to last 24 months. The completed facility will be handed over to the state government for operation and maintenance.

Chow emphasized that the project would not require financial contributions from the temple, the Penang Hindu Endowments Board (PHEB), or the state government, but expressed openness to providing assistance if necessary. PHEB chairman RSN Rayer expressed gratitude to Hartasuma for their efforts, highlighting the benefits for devotees who struggle to reach the temple.

Hartasuma executive director Tan Sri M. Ravindran reiterated the company’s commitment to creating a positive social impact through sustainable infrastructure, emphasizing that the Hilltop Temple Mobility Initiative aims to ensure inclusivity and heritage preservation for visitors of all ages and abilities.
