Harimau Malaya Head Coach Appointment Remains Unresolved

Kuala Lumpur:The decision on appointing the next head coach for Harimau Malaya is still under discussion, amid speculation that a Japanese coach could take the helm. A thorough evaluation will be conducted before any appointment is finalized.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Youth and Sports Minister Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari stated that discussions will involve the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the appointment brings the best possible outcomes for Malaysian football.

Dr. Taufiq emphasized the importance of a comprehensive assessment based on performance and work processes before making a decision. Japanese coach Hajime Moriyasu has been rumored as a potential candidate, as the national team aims to qualify for the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

The FAM has not dismissed the possibility of hiring a foreign coach, which aligns with their recent efforts to strengthen the team following the formation of a new executive committee. Nonetheless, the FAM is also open to retaining a local coach if they can deliver the desired results.

Currently, Harimau Malaya is led by interim coach Tan Cheng Hoe, who recently guided the team to a third-place finish in the ASEAN Championship, remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament. The team achieved notable results, including a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh, a 0-0 draw with Indonesia, and a 6-0 win against Singapore, before securing a 1-0 win over Vietnam in the bronze medal playoff.
