Jakarta:Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim congratulated the Harimau Malaya team on their victory against Vietnam, securing third place in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted the team's impressive performance throughout the tournament, as they remained undefeated and did not concede a single goal. In a Facebook post, he expressed gratitude to the players and coaching staff for their dedication and fighting spirit.
The Prime Minister encouraged the national squad to continue striving for future success and bring glory to Malaysia. However, he clarified that no public holiday would be declared following this achievement, emphasizing that work should continue as usual, including for expatriates in Malaysia.
Malaysia ended a 12-year streak without a win against Vietnam by securing a 1-0 victory in the third-place playoff match at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta. Fergus Tierney, a second-half substitute, scored the decisive goal in the 62nd minute, ensuring the team, led by interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe, finished the tournament in third place.
