Ayer keroh: Happiness must be redefined as a shared responsibility anchored in resilience, compassion and collective well-being, said Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye. He said happiness is not merely an individual pursuit, but a common aspiration that can be nurtured through empathy, justice and a strong sense of community.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, in a statement in conjunction with the International Day of Happiness 2026, Lee Lam Thye noted that this year's observance comes at a time of mounting global challenges, including conflicts, economic uncertainty, rising cost of living, climate change, and growing mental health concerns. He highlighted how these realities weigh heavily on individuals, families and communities, affecting not only livelihoods but also emotional and psychological well-being.
Lee Lam Thye emphasized that true happiness lies in knowing that we are not alone and that caring for one another, supporting the vulnerable, and building communities grounded in empathy and trust are essential. He underscored the importance of prioritizing mental health, advocating that seeking help should never be seen as a weakness, and called for addressing the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
He also called for stronger social cohesion through acts of kindness, volunteerism, and community engagement to restore hope and connection among people. Lee stressed the importance of promoting fairness and inclusivity, noting that inequality and injustice are major barriers to achieving a harmonious society.
He further added that sustainable living must be embraced, as protecting the environment is essential to safeguarding the well-being of future generations. He concluded by urging people to cultivate gratitude and mindfulness in their daily lives, suggesting that even in difficult times, finding meaning in small acts and simple moments can help individuals stay grounded and hopeful.
