Hannah Yeoh Appointed as Minister in Prime Minister’s Department for Federal Territories

Kuala lumpur: Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has been appointed as the new Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) following the Cabinet reshuffle announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the 46-year-old Yeoh, who previously held the Youth and Sports Minister portfolio, has a distinguished career, having been the Speaker of the Selangor State Legislative Assembly from 2013 to 2018. She made history during her tenure as the first woman and the youngest person to hold that position.

The Youth and Sports Minister portfolio will now be led by Sungai Petani MP Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari. Yeoh's extensive administrative experience includes her previous role as Deputy Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development in 2018 before she became the Youth and Sports Minister in 2022.

Yeoh is also the DAP's Central Executive Committee deputy secretary-general for the 2025-2028 term. A mother of two and a former lawyer, she began her political journey by joining DAP in 2006. She served as the Subang Jaya assemblyman for two terms starting in 2008 and transitioned to the parliamentary level in 2018 after winning the Segambut seat.

Her educational background includes early education at Sekolah Kebangsaan Seri Subang Jaya, Sekolah Kebangsaan SS19 Subang Jaya, and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Subang Utama. She pursued a law degree at the University of Tasmania, Australia, graduating with a Bachelor of Laws in 2001.

During her tenure as Youth and Sports Minister, Yeoh focused on sexual harassment and athlete safety, advocating for transparent investigations, victim protection, codes of conduct, and complaint mechanisms within sports associations. As Deputy Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, she was vocal on issues of underage marriage and legislation concerning sexual harassment.

Yeoh has also expressed her views on the rights of stateless children, proposing the creation of a special agency or ministry to address children's issues. In the 15th General Election on November 19, 2022, she successfully defended the Segambut parliamentary seat for a second consecutive term, defeating challengers from Perikatan Nasional and Barisan Nasional with a majority of 59,684 votes.
