Kuala lumpur: The launch of Great Wall Motor's (GWM) WEY G9 Hi4 PHEV (WEY G9) has secured over 800 bookings within its first week, reflecting strong early demand for the first locally assembled luxury new energy multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and growing confidence in intelligent hybrid mobility.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, GWM Malaysia announced in a statement that the WEY G9 represents a strategic step in positioning Malaysia as a regional production and export hub for higher-value new energy vehicles within ASEAN. Investment, Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Sim Tze Tzin highlighted that the introduction of WEY G9 is a bold step forward by GWM to make first-class mobility more accessible.
Sim stated that prioritising comfort, safety, and advanced mobility for Malaysian families aligns perfectly with the national goal of inclusive and balanced economic growth. He emphasized the value of local assembly initiatives, enabling the company to leverage Malaysia's ecosystem of specialised vendors and skilled workforce while benefiting from free trade agreements to support regional exports.
Furthermore, Sim noted that the initiative supports the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP 2030) by increasing economic complexity, strengthening domestic vendor participation, and enhancing technological depth through meaningful technology transfer.
Meanwhile, GWM Malaysia managing director Cui Anqi expressed encouragement by the strong response from Malaysian customers. Anqi mentioned that the bookings symbolize more than just numbers, indicating that customers understand what the WEY G9 stands for, embodying the vision of intelligent luxury mobility by seamlessly combining advanced technology with genuine comfort.
GWM Malaysia chief operating officer Roslan Abdullah remarked that the milestone reflects not only strong customer demand but also the capability of the country's local assembly ecosystem. Abdullah emphasized that by leveraging skilled workforce and vendor network, Malaysia is proving its ability to deliver global standards while building long-term value for the domestic industry.
Priced at RM269,800, the WEY G9, launched on January 29 at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), blends hybrid performance, efficiency, safety, and high-end comfort in a locally assembled package. Powered by GWM's Hi4 intelligent hybrid system, the model offers up to 170 kilometres of pure electric driving range and a combined range exceeding 1,000 kilometres.
