Kuala Lumpur: As a democratic nation, Malaysia places great emphasis on diplomatic relations and courtesy in welcoming state guests. Each official visit is more than just a protocol as it symbolises respect and friendship between nations. One of the key elements in honouring diplomatic guests is the Guard of Honour Ceremony, conducted by the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Commanding Officer of the First Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (1 RAMD), Colonel Mohd Fuad Md Ghazali, stated that the ceremony, which is steeped in tradition, embodies the highest honour for national leaders, including the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Malay Rulers as well as foreign heads of government and distinguished guests. “It is unique and special as it showcases uniformity, a high level of discipline, and the resoluteness of MAF personnel while also reflecting the military’s readiness in safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty,” he told Bernama after a rehearsal for the official welcoming ceremony of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Perdana Putra Complex recently.
Mohd Fuad explained that the Guard of Honour Ceremony is conducted during significant events such as the official birthday celebration of the King, the welcoming of foreign heads of state, coronations, and the opening of Parliament. “It begins with the arrival of the guest of honour, followed by an honour guard performance consisting of military personnel in a designated formation,” he said, adding that the guest would then inspect the military formation before it concludes with a salute, accompanied by the national anthem and an artillery salute if the ceremony involves a head of state.
He emphasized that the ceremony goes beyond the precision and uniformity of the drills, also highlighting cultural elements in each performance. “The ceremonial uniform, featuring the Baju Melayu, songkok and sampin, accentuates the beauty of Malay heritage, while the structured drill movements depict the high level of discipline among its members. The scrutiny of attire and accessories ensure a flawless appearance, while the hoisting of the Royal Standard of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Regimental Colours symbolises unwavering loyalty to the royal institution and the nation,” he said.
Mohd Fuad noted that the ceremony plays a crucial role in solidifying a positive image and reputation of the country on the international stage through MAF’s professionalism and excellence. “Among the achievements of the Guard of Honour team was its participation in a parade alongside Commonwealth forces during the coronation of King Charles III in London, United Kingdom, in 2023. .the team was invited to perform London public duties (ceremonial and security-related responsibilities) including the ‘Changing of the Guard’ ceremonies at Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle in 2008,” he said, adding that the Guard of Honour is mounted by four officers and 103 personnel of other ranks.
However, behind the brilliance of the formations and the flawless execution of drill movements, there are significant challenges that the members must endure. He said the ceremony would take up to 35 minutes, which demands good stamina and focus, regardless of the weather conditions, adding that the slightest mistake can disrupt the entire performance and tarnish the nation’s image. “However, each member has been trained in corrective drills and is prepared to handle any eventuality,” he said.
Mohd Fuad, who has served in the MAF for over 30 years, stated that preparations to ensure the smooth execution of the ceremony involve a rigorous selection process based on strict physical criteria and a high level of discipline. “Guards are selected through a strict screening process, with a height requirement of between 173 to 176 cm and a body mass index (BMI) of between 21 and 24. In addition, they must maintain a neat and smart appearance. They must also undergo intensive training, including standing motionless while maintaining a forward gaze for at least one hour. Additionally, they require a minimum of 10 to 15 training sessions before being deemed eligible to participate in the honour guard ceremony,” he added.
