Kuala lumpur: A proposal for the formation of a 'Grand Collaboration' through political understanding (Tafahum Siyasi) among the country's political party coalitions has been put forward to avoid political clashes that would be detrimental to the ummah and the nation, said UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He emphasized that the concept does not involve a merger of political parties, but rather a common ground for mutual understanding aimed at preserving political stability and reinvigorating national economic growth.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Zahid highlighted that the approach draws lessons from historical events such as the Treaty of Hudaibiyah and the opening of Makkah, illustrating that political victory and understanding must be accompanied by values like forgiveness, compassion, and unity. He clarified that this 'Grand Collaboration' is not about merging parties but about avoiding detrimental clashes. He acknowledged the concern among Malays who are weary of internal conflicts.
He made these remarks during his presidential address at the 2026 UMNO General Assembly at the World Trade Centre (WTC).
Furthermore, Ahmad Zahid, who also serves as Deputy Prime Minister, outlined three key principles guiding the Tafahum Siyasi understanding: prioritizing common ground for the benefit of the ummah, respecting ideological differences along with the respective parties' guidelines, and upholding flexibility in practising tolerance. He also emphasized the importance of honesty and sincerity as fundamental elements for the success of this political understanding, warning against the repetition of betrayal and broken agreements.
In his address, Ahmad Zahid reminded UMNO of its foundational character as a party that plans with a long-term vision, beyond just electoral cycles. The party's history of formulating inclusive socioeconomic plans, such as the New Economic Policy (NEP) and the National Transformation 2050 (TN50) vision, was cited as evidence of its commitment to addressing the aspirations of new generations, including Gen Z and Gen Alpha.
He underscored that UMNO's priority extends beyond winning elections to ensuring a solid national framework and direction for future leaders.
