Kuala lumpur: Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) is ready to face the state election with either the existing number of state seats or an increased number following the proposed redelineation exercise, its chairman Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said. The number of seats to be contested would not be an issue, the Sarawak Premier stressed.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari emphasized that GPS has no problem contesting with either the current 82 seats or an expanded 99 seats if the redelineation is completed in time. "We have no problem. If there are 82 seats, then 82 seats. If there are 99 seats, then 99 seats," he stated during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Regency Specialist Hospital Kuching site. He noted that the election's primary focus should be on proceeding according to the stipulated provisions and timeframe, irrespective of the redelineation outcome.

In July of last year, the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly passed the State Legislative Assembly (Composition of Membership) Bill 2025, which aimed to add 17 new seats, increasing the total to 99. Recently, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reportedly requested the Election Commission (EC) to prepare an updated report on the proposed redelineation exercise to expand the number of Sarawak state seats.

MADANI Government spokesman Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil mentioned that the redelineation issue was discussed in a recent Cabinet meeting, where the Prime Minister expressed his commitment to implementing the changes. The current mandate of the Sarawak state government is set to expire in February 2027.
