Kuala lumpur: The government's total tax refunds in 2025 hit the highest level in five years, supported by an additional payment of RM7.5 billion in December last year, compared to the total additional allocation for excess tax refunds of RM4 billion announced previously. The Ministry of Finance (MOF) revealed that the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) completed tax refunds amounting to RM22.45 billion for the year, benefiting 3.6 million taxpayers.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the MOF was responding to a query from Chong Chieng Jen (PH-Stampin) regarding tax arrears refunded to taxpayers who had overpaid, including the number of taxpayers involved. The ministry detailed its future plans, stating that the IRB's priority for the current year is to complete company tax refunds for the 2023 assessment year within the first quarter of 2026. Additionally, refunds for the 2024 assessment year are expected to conclude by the end of 2026.
The ministry also clarified that refunds of excess tax, irrespective of the case's ageing, will be processed for all taxpayers aside from companies. This information was conveyed in a written reply published on the Parliament website today.
