Kuala Lumpur: The government is set to enhance legal aid access for the B40 community, especially in remote areas of Sabah and Sarawak, with plans to gradually increase the number of mobile legal service vans nationwide. Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran announced this initiative, highlighting the current operation of five mobile vans under the Justice on Wheels (JoW) initiative, three of which were acquired under the leadership of the Madani Government.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kulasegaran emphasized that this initiative is part of the government’s efforts to assist B40 communities facing challenges in accessing legal services, particularly in rural areas. Speaking after officiating the JoW 2025 programme, he noted that the mobile legal aid programme had previously been held in areas such as Paitan, Tongod, Pitas, Papar, and Sipitang, with citizenship registration concerns being the most frequently raised issues.
Kulasegaran further explained that, while the programme cannot directly address citizenship issues, which fall under the jurisdiction of the National Registration Department, the legal professionals involved will provide essential guidance on navigating the legal process and resolving documentation issues. The initiative, which began last year in Sabah and Sarawak, not only offers legal services but also aims to increase awareness about national legal matters within underserved communities.
