Govt Has Repaid RM42 Bln Of 1MDB Debts, 1MDB Debts Still Exceed RM50 Billion: PM Anwar

Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim disclosed that 1Malaysia Development Bhd’s (1MDB) debts have not been fully settled, with total financial obligations exceeding RM50 billion. Anwar, who also serves as the Finance Minister, stated that the government has paid RM42 billion to cover 1MDB’s debts, including principal and interest, as well as other commitments since 2018.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted that the inherited 1MDB debt since 2018 amounts to RM34 billion in principal value and involves interest commitments of around RM17 billion. He shared this information during the Prime Minister’s question time in the Dewan Rakyat.

Anwar further clarified that only RM29 billion of the RM42 billion paid by the government could be financed through funds derived from 1MDB asset recovery. This indicates that asset recovery efforts have been insufficient in covering 1MDB’s liability repayment commitments.

The Prime Minister also noted that the remaining 1MDB debt obligations require the use of government funds totaling RM13 billion. He emphasized that the unresolved 1MDB debt obligations amount to RM9 billion, which includes the principal and interest of Islamic medium-term sukuk notes extending to 2039, comprising RM5 billion in principal and RM4 billion in interest. Anwar provided this information in response to a question from Syahredzan Johan (PH-Bangi).
