Kuantan: The government is contemplating the use of cloud seeding operations as an alternative measure to extinguish a persistent fire at a coconut plantation along the Kuantan-Sungai Ular Bypass.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad noted that any cloud seeding efforts would depend on the necessity and prevailing weather conditions. Consultation with experts and relevant agencies would be required prior to implementation. He emphasized that cloud seeding is a complex process requiring coordination with MetMalaysia, assessment of cloud suitability, and consideration of costs.
The peatland fire has been burning for 13 days, destroying approximately 130 hectares of coconut plantations and spreading to nearby forest areas since it began on February 22. Current fire suppression efforts include water bombing using a helicopter, creating firebreaks, flooding affected areas, and direct firefighting. Nik Nazmi mentioned that, while some areas have been extinguished, the remote locations combined with challenging weather conditions make the task difficult. So far, 98 hectares, or 60% of the affected area, have been extinguished.
Nik Nazmi also highlighted the government’s seriousness about addressing peatland fires, stating that the ministry has requested increased allocations under the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13) to enhance fire prevention infrastructure in peatland areas. He mentioned ongoing collaborations with the Department of Environment, the Department of Irrigation and Drainage, and state governments to prioritize fire prevention measures.
Regarding the recent National Haze and Dry Weather Main Committee meeting, Nik Nazmi said discussions centered on preparing for the dry season with a focus on air quality data and agency coordination. He noted the current decrease in rainfall during the Northeast Monsoon’s final phase, which has contributed to the frequency of peatland fires, including the current coconut plantation fire, the largest of this year.
