Kuala lumpur: The government has announced an increase in the national rice stockpile to ensure a steady supply for up to nine months. This decision comes as a precautionary measure amid ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, which could potentially impact food security.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu stated that this proactive step is part of the government's strategy to maintain stability in the availability of essential food items should the conflict involving the United States and Iran continue. He assured the public that there is no immediate need to panic, as the current supplies of rice, chicken, eggs, fish, and meat are adequate until at least May or June.
The announcement was made during a press conference following a special Cabinet meeting focused on assessing the impact of the West Asia conflict on the national economy. Attendees included Minister of Communications Datuk Fahmi Fadzil and Minister of Finance II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan.
In addition to increasing the rice stockpile, Mohamad emphasized the importance of public participation in bolstering domestic food supply. He encouraged citizens to grow fast-yielding crops like chilli, eggplant, and chives in their homes. This initiative is reminiscent of the Green Book Campaign from the era of Malaysia's second Prime Minister, the late Tun Abdul Razak Hussein, aimed at enhancing food security through community involvement.
Mohamad also advised against speculation regarding food supply and prices, assuring that the government is actively monitoring the situation and will implement necessary interventions. He reassured citizens that they can look forward to celebrating Aidilfitri with sufficient and secure food provisions.
