Govt Announces New Skills Training to Enhance RELA’s Role

Kuala lumpur: The government will continue to strengthen the role of the Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department (RELA) through various new skills training programmes, systematic disaster management, professional first aid training and a better understanding of digital security. Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said this is in line with RELA's important role as one of the country's security agencies and a strategic national asset in helping safeguard the nation's security and peace.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Shamsul Anuar emphasized that as RELA marks its 54th anniversary, the security challenges have evolved significantly from the past. Instead of the physical threats or guerrillas in the jungle faced in 1972, today's challenges include cyber threats, cross-border crimes, the spread of false information, community security issues, and climate change that brings unforeseen disasters.

He conveyed these thoughts during his speech at RELA's 54th anniversary celebration and the MADANI Warriors Carnival tour, which was attended by Home Ministry deputy secretary-general (security) Datuk Abdul Halim Abdul Rahman and RELA director-general Datuk Rosli Yaakub. Shamsul Anuar highlighted that RELA has transformed into a modern department with a structured organization, equipped with training, equipment, and expertise comparable to other security agencies.

Shamsul Anuar noted that RELA's evolution proves its continued relevance and adaptability to current challenges. Beyond assisting in community patrols and security at major events, RELA serves as an additional set of eyes and ears for the authorities. He asserted that RELA exemplifies the enduring spirit of volunteerism and patriotism among Malaysians. The government is committed to ensuring that the welfare and needs of RELA personnel receive ongoing attention.

The event also recognized nearly 1,000 RELA personnel, celebrating the establishment of RELA and acknowledging the service and sacrifices of its members. Shamsul Anuar presented the RELA International Medal to Sarawak RELA operations officer S. Shanthi, along with the RELA Service Medal to 20 personnel and the General Medal to five personnel.
