Putrajaya: The government is expected to announce the outcome of negotiations with Thailand regarding trade issues involving fisheries and agricultural products by the end of this month. This includes addressing the ban on Malaysia's shrimp exports to Thailand, which has been active since 2017.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu stated that the negotiations are in their final stage following a visit by officials from Thailand's Ministry of Agriculture to Malaysia. "We will also conduct inspections there, and the negotiations are now in their final stage. This is the fastest time in which a resolution has been reached," Mohamad Sabu conveyed to reporters after officiating the Global Animal Production and Veterinary Industry Summit (GAVIS).

Mohamad emphasized that the outcome of these negotiations is anticipated to be mutually beneficial for both nations. Last Thursday, he issued a statement following the first National Food Security Council Meeting for 2026, indicating the government's efforts to resolve the long-standing ban on Malaysian shrimp exports to Thailand. This ban has been in place since 2017, alongside Malaysia's pending application for market access for livestock products to Thailand, which has been unresolved since 2024.

The meeting also addressed Thailand's ban on shrimp imports into Malaysia, effective from June 1, and the implementation of stricter inspections on Malaysian seabass exports to Thailand.

In his speech, Mohamad highlighted that GAVIS 2026 convened 108 presenters, including 51 international experts from countries such as China, Australia, the United Kingdom, Indonesia, and Vietnam. He noted that the summit serves as a significant platform for participants to exchange knowledge, foster innovation, and strengthen collaboration in tackling shared challenges.
