Government Targets Enhanced Internet Access in Seven Key Areas: Teo

Kulai: The Communications Ministry is focusing on enhancing the coverage and quality of internet services in seven key focus areas to ensure more stable and comprehensive access for users nationwide. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching announced that the targeted areas include event venues, public higher education institutions (IPTA), military camps, stadiums, tourist destinations, hospitals, as well as highways and protocol routes.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Minister Teo detailed the progress in each area, stating that for event venues, 17 locations have been identified and fully upgraded. For IPTA, following discussions with the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), 81 institutions have been earmarked for the initiative. Regarding military camps, 73 locations are in the request-for-proposal (RFP) stage for internet upgrades. In the case of stadiums, one location has been completed, and work is underway on two others.

Teo further elaborated that for tourist areas, 23 locations are slated for improvement, with six completed so far. For hospitals, internet upgrades are planned at 20 locations, with seven already completed. Lastly, on highways and protocol routes, seven locations have been identified, and one has been completed to date.

The Deputy Minister shared these updates with reporters after officiating at the closing ceremony of Run for the Future 2025, a corporate social responsibility (CSR) event held at Hutan Bandar Kulai. She emphasized that the initiative is being implemented in collaboration with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and telecommunications service providers to ensure satisfactory internet access in hotspot areas, especially during major events or periods of high visitor traffic.

In another development, Teo praised the Kuala Lumpur Tower management for its decision to include Iban and Kadazan languages on the Welcome Wall, alongside Tamil. She remarked that this move reflects the Malaysia MADANI spirit, celebrating the diversity of local cultures and languages. Teo noted that the inclusion of these languages is a step towards acknowledging the identity of communities in Sabah and Sarawak.
