Kuala lumpur: The government has gathered the relevant input for the National Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Strategy Document through a series of workshops and discussions with industry players and stakeholders. Deputy Minister of Plantation and Commodities (KPK) Datuk Chan Foong Hin announced this initiative, highlighting the collaborative approach taken to draft the strategic document.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the document is currently being developed by KPK in conjunction with the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). It is at the preliminary discussion stage, with plans to incorporate various factors such as production, demand, technological developments, and the implementation of SAF mandates by neighboring countries. The strategy aims to position Malaysia as a leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel.
Further discussions with MITI are scheduled for the first quarter of 2026. Deputy Minister Chan stated that the drafting and reviewing of the final version of the document will continue until the end of 2026. The completed document is expected to be presented to the Cabinet in early 2027, marking a significant step toward Malaysia’s sustainable aviation goals.
During a question-and-answer session in the Dewan Negara, Chan responded to Senator Che Alias Hamid’s inquiry regarding the timeline for finalizing the National SAF Strategy Document. The document is seen as a crucial component in supporting Malaysia’s ambition to become one of the world’s leading SAF producers.
As part of the strategy, the government is formulating the introduction of an SAF blending mandate to stimulate demand for sustainable fuel. Chan mentioned that the proposed mandate will initially require a one percent blend, with plans for a gradual increase based on suitability and need.
