Kuala lumpur: The government is committed to the ongoing identification of green and open spaces in the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur on a monthly basis to ensure more public spaces are preserved for public use. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh emphasized that this initiative is implemented through a fast-track approach by the Special Task Force on the Declaration of Open and Green Spaces, which was established to expedite the process.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Yeoh highlighted the collaboration between Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the Director of Lands and Mines to enhance the identification efforts every month. This initiative is seen as a central focus and priority for the government. Yeoh assured that this effort will continue monthly, with more areas being earmarked for gazetting over time.
Yeoh also announced the gazetting of an additional 45 green and open spaces, covering 277,663.90 square meters (27.76 hectares), elevating the total number of protected areas to 539 locations. She stated that these areas are now secured as public property, ensuring they remain public spaces for the community, families, and future generations, thanks to the efforts of the Special Task Force under the Federal Territory Department (JWP).
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to make Kuala Lumpur a more sustainable and resilient city. This includes adapting the 'Sponge City' concept to address flooding issues and the city's rising temperatures. Yeoh informed the public that they can access the full list of gazetted areas through the official portal of the Office of the Director of Lands and Mines of the Federal Territory.
Yeoh further mentioned that the Special Task Force for the Declaration of Open and Green Spaces will be led by Datuk Muhammad Azmi Mohd Zain and will involve various key agencies, including the Federal Territory Land and Mines Department and related technical agencies, with regular meetings scheduled every month.
