Penang: The government, through the Ministry of Communications, is formulating initiatives to assist media practitioners in navigating challenges, including advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and economic uncertainty. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil emphasized the importance of these efforts during this year's National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) celebration.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi acknowledged the concerns among media practitioners regarding their job security and future in the industry due to AI and economic issues. He assured that the government, particularly the Ministry of Communications, is exploring solutions to support the media industry. Fahmi highlighted that a free and ethical media is crucial for the country's democratic system and the future of Malaysia.
The theme for HAWANA 2026, 'Media Integrity Strengthens Credibility,' underscores the event's focus. The highlight of the celebration will occur at the PICCA Convention Centre @ Arena Butterworth in Penang on June 20, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expected to officiate. The event will gather around 1,000 media practitioners from domestic and international backgrounds, providing a strategic platform for generating new ideas and setting the direction for contemporary journalism.
National Journalists' Day is observed on May 29, coinciding with the first edition of the Utusan Melayu newspaper in 1939, to honor the contributions of media practitioners and veteran journalists to the nation's development. Organised by the Ministry of Communications with the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as the implementing agency, HAWANA is a pinnacle platform recognizing the dedication and professionalism of media practitioners in Malaysia.
