Government Evaluates Aid for Padi Farmers Amid Fertiliser Delays

Kuala Lumpur:The government will evaluate the possibility of providing targeted assistance to padi farmers who have experienced yield declines due to delays in fertiliser supplies. The assessment will be conducted on a case-by-case basis to ensure that aid reaches those genuinely affected.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu emphasized the importance of identifying the farmers who have suffered losses before any assistance is considered. He stated that, if funds are available, aid would be targeted rather than universal, focusing on those who experienced yield declines in affected areas.

During a session in the Dewan Rakyat, Mohamad responded to a supplementary question from Sabri Azit (PN-Jerai) regarding potential incentives for padi farmers impacted by fertiliser supply delays. He mentioned proactive measures, including discussions with the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA) to understand the delays, and suggested terminating contracts with suppliers who failed to meet obligations, a proposal made to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, who is also the Finance Minister.

In other news, Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari announced that 10 percent of the funds from the Warriors' Fund Campaign (KTP) are allocated for investment in fixed deposits to generate returns. As of September 22, RM1.51 million has been placed in a fixed deposit with Bank Islam Malaysia Bhd, maturing in 2027. The Finance Ministry has also allocated RM2 million to KTP, with approval pending for further investment to enhance the fund's sustainability. Adly addressed these points in response to a question about the strategic transformation of the Warriors' Fund towards more sustainable fundraising models.
