Behrang: The government is in the process of drafting guidelines to ensure that all mosques and surau across the nation are equipped with facilities that accommodate persons with disabilities (PwDs), announced Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Dr. Zulkifli Hasan.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the guidelines will be part of the Action Plan of Religious Agencies for Muslim PwDs. Dr. Zulkifli mentioned that discussions with relevant stakeholders have been conducted to advance this initiative. The project aims to enhance religious inclusivity by training imams and teachers in Braille literacy and providing e-Braille or e-Dot systems, sponsored by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), for PwDs' use.
Dr. Zulkifli shared these developments with reporters following the 'MADANI Membantu: Ziarah Kasih Rahmah (ZIKIR) 2026' event with the Behrang community. He acknowledged that while some mosques have already implemented facilities for PwDs, further enhancements are required to improve accessibility. Notably, some mosques have begun offering sign language interpretation during sermons, demonstrating progress in inclusivity.
Dr. Zulkifli emphasized that although widespread implementation poses challenges, it is attainable with strong commitment and detailed planning. In his capacity as chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Malaysian Waqf Foundation (YWM), he highlighted today's programme as a collaborative effort involving YWM, local mosque committees, government agencies, partners, and volunteers to uplift the community's well-being.
The initiative included distributing food boxes to 150 households and providing free petrol and breakfast to over 500 residents. Additionally, services such as waqf counters, advisory services, and free health screenings were offered, allowing the public to access a range of services in one location.
