Government Allocates RM350 Million for East-West Highway Upgrade in Perak

Nanta: The government has allocated RM350 million to upgrade the East-West Highway (JRTB), specifically the section in Perak or route FT004 under the First Rolling Plan (RP1) of the 13th Malaysia Plan (MP13), to ensure the route is safer, comfortable and more resilient.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi mentioned that preliminary work for the project could commence this year, with the hope of some physical implementation next year. Of the total allocation, RM170 million will be used to address 17 locations, with RM10 million per location allocated to widen roads into overtaking lanes, enhancing safety and comfort for road users.

Additionally, Nanta stated that approximately RM40 million has been set aside for maintenance work on the JRTB section in Perak throughout the year. This maintenance aims to improve the safety and comfort levels for road users. The allocation covers various maintenance activities by the Public Works Department (JKR) and concession companies, including road surface repairs, installation of safety facilities, and lighting improvements.

Nanta emphasized that the concession company Belati Wangsa Sdn Bhd is actively carrying out maintenance work, with continued oversight from the Works Ministry to monitor the route's condition and requirements. This ensures any necessary improvements are made to provide a safe and comfortable experience for road users.

The urgency of these upgrades is underscored by the tragic accident on June 9, 2025, when 15 UPSI students lost their lives in a collision at Kilometre 53 of the East-West Highway (Jeli-Gerik), Perak. Of those, 13 died at the scene, while two succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.
