Kuala lumpur: National track cycling ace Datuk Mohd Azizulhasni Awang ended his campaign at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games by finishing 10th in the men's 1,000-metre time trial event at the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome here today. Mohd Azizulhasni clocked one minute 1.357 seconds, while Australian rider Leigh Hoffman won the gold medal with a time of 58.530s, followed by England's Joseph Truman, who took silver (59.525s), and another Australian rider Tayte Ryan, who claimed bronze (59.684s).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Glasgow 2026 men's keirin gold medallist said today's race was not part of his original plan, but he volunteered to compete after learning that no Malaysian rider had been registered for the event. 'Before coming here, the team only registered my name for the keirin and sprint events, but when I found out there was no representative for the 1,000m event - which is usually contested by Fadhil (Muhammad Fadhil Zonis) - I asked if any other riders wanted to take part, but no one did. They asked whether I was really sure (about participating) because this event is extremely challenging, but I agreed because this could be my final Commonwealth Games. So, I thought it would be better for me to just ride,' said the 38-year-old cyclist when met by Bernama here.

Mohd Azizulhasni said the 1,000m time trial was considered the final chapter of his Commonwealth Games campaign. 'After putting in a good performance in the keirin, this race was more about being my final race at the Commonwealth Games. My time today was also almost similar to what I clocked at the recent National Championships. I am happy with the achievement. Of course, I wanted to record a faster time, but my body was already quite fatigued after competing in the keirin and sprint events. For me, this is an ideal ending,' said the cyclist, who is known as The Pocket Rocketman.

Mohd Azizulhasni had earlier delivered Malaysia's seventh gold medal at the Games after winning the keirin event, completing his collection of titles with his maiden Commonwealth Games gold medal. In the sprint event, the challenge for the former world champion and Tokyo 2020 Olympic silver medallist ended in the quarter-finals after he was defeated by Hoffman.
